Let us break this down, shall we?

"If they stand behind you give them protection."

Protecting those who look to you for that legitimately is not only responsibility of a leader, it is second nature. A Leader, is ethical and civic-minded. They encourage strategic thinking, innovation, and action. They practice effective communication. The only way to have effective communication is to be respectful and intentional in your speech and actions. Leadership is a character trait that exposes itself in any and all situations and facets of life.

"If they stand beside you give them respect." Respect is something that may not be tangible but must be reciprocated by all those involved. The definition of respect is to treat others the way you want to be treated. Being considerate and honoring the feelings, opinions, and property of others. "If they stand against you show them no mercy." To be merciless is to be a cruelly violent person, or it can be more figurative. Making someone regret their decision to stand in opposition of you is also the responsibility of a leader. All that to say that a great leader has to be a great follower and listener.
